Review: The Perfect Nanny

Nov 20, 2019

The Perfect Nanny The Perfect Nanny by Leïla Slimani
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The story of this book sounded so good but I was let down.

The story was interesting but at the end it just stopped and even my husband looked at me and said "is that it?" I expected there to be a twist somewhere or something. But the opening of the book basically told you how the book ends and the middle of the book is just how the nanny got to the end.

If the author would have left the ending for the ending of the book, I would have loved this book but because it was revealed in the beginning, I guess I was expecting a twist but nope, just the story on how the nanny killed the kids.

I wanted so much more from the story. More detail into why the nanny did what she did but that was it. Also, we had so many characters thrown into the story that I feel were not needed. I understand the author was trying to tell the nanny's story but I wasn't outlined very well and the side characters just seemed to be fillers.

This is like a 2.5 star - that is why I wish GR would give us half star ratings but I don't like to rate down - so I have to rate up - which means the ratings for the book is actually wrong.

If you want to just read a book to have something to read then fine go ahead and read this but I don't recommend reading it. I kept pushing through because I thought there was going to be more of story line toward the end but nope - it just ends.

Review: The Handmaid's Tale: The Graphic Novel

Nov 17, 2019

The Handmaid's Tale: The Graphic Novel The Handmaid's Tale: The Graphic Novel by Renée Nault
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been fascinated by this story since I started watching the TV show. This has become one of my all time favorite stories.

This Graphic Novel follows along with the show. I do love the art work and the strong story behind this. It makes me think of what it could really be like for women if they take our rights away. The story did end a bit different but I see where the ending came from. Based on the show - the women recorded tons of tapes and this ends with references to the tapes.

The government has been taken over and the world they once knew is no longer there. Women no longer have rights and men control it all. Women are used to carry babies to the wives that are unable to conceive. Forced to have monthly routines and ceremonies, this story is sad. I love how strong June is. The TV show is amazing. It is a bit for the mature audiences only so kids allowed for this show peeps.

I don't want to give much since this is such a short novel but I highly recommend it.

Review: Harmony House

Harmony House Harmony House by Nic Sheff
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

With it being Halloween season I wanted something a bit more scary but I ended up really not enjoying this. If this wasn't so short I would have DNF'd it. I really don't know the story line to this book.

We follow Jen and her move to a new town and new home. The thing is, the people in the town talk about how scary and haunted Harmony House is but I feel like you never get the back story. You find out that apparently Jen is supposed to have some kind of power but I don't know, I just really did not get this book. It was very mixed. It wasn't put together well. The story was not smooth. It was just skipping and you missed a lot of between the lines stuff that wasn't there for you.

I am shacking my head 3 times no on this one. It took me way to long to read this only 5 hours audiobook.

Review: Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me by Mariko Tamaki
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was just okay. I really wanted to love it but it just didn't happen. There were times I would get a bit lost and wonder where the story just jumped to but then I would catch back up.

The art was very good. I loved the colors. That is what drew me into this graphic novel.

We follow 2 girls that keep dating and breaking up. Laura Dean is a bit of an egocentric person. She cares for no one but herself. But poor Freddy keeps wanting more.

After Freddy keeps pushing away her best friend to make things happen with Laura Dean, things become clear. Something is wrong with Freddy's best friend. Doodle becomes secluded and when someone tells Freddy she needs to be concerned for her best friend, Freddy searches out the matter.

The story line is cute by the very end but getting there was a bit confusing at times. I think I was comparing it to "Heartbreaker" but please don't do that. It does mess the story up when comparing it to that. I wanted the feels from this one like I got from Heartbreaker, but it didn't happen. I think that I why it let me down.

It is still a solid read and a solid 3 stars.

Review: Capturing the Devil

Capturing the Devil Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco
My rating: 0 of 5 stars

Okay, so I have set on this a while and I did not love this. I was so disappointed in the last installment of this series. I love Kerri and her writing but this wasn't my favorite story. I wanted so much more of the H.H. Holmes story but you honestly got like 25% H.H. Holmes & 75% love story. Granted, I loved the story but it was so long. The author definitely took her time with this so everyone could get the love story but I wanted more of what we got in the first 2 books. Book 3 and Book 4 began to really lean toward Thomas & Audrey a lot more and their story.

H.H. Holmes has so much behind his story. I have been researching him for about 2 years and there was so much that could have been put into this story. I also kept getting thrown off because she kept calling him Jack the Ripper. - Yes some believe he may be the same but some do not. I did watch a study on H.H. Holmes that was featured by Holmes' great great great grandson. He was trying to debunk if Holmes really was the Ripper. Now there are a million and one signs that points him to being the ripper. Such as his fake names being used on the logs that boarded the ship to London at the time the Ripper attacks happened as well as when they stopped, it showed his name on the return manifest. Then the killings began to happen in Chicago.

I don't really know but I wanted to so much more on this story.

NOW Kerri does have a new work in process and I still make sure I pick anything she writes.

My heart can not wait until the release of this book! I don't think she could have ended a series off on a better story. I have special ordered the Beacon Box for this book and then there is another box where this book is being featured coming March 30th that I am eyeing.

I have also bought several of the releases and special books editions for Finale by Stephanie Garber. These 2 book are my most anticipated for 2019. The days are getting closer even though I still have to wait until September for Capturing the Devil. I also, have not seen the actual cover reveal for this book yet, so I am so excited when I get to this book cover.

**The story of H.H. Holmes runs pretty close to the story of Jack the Ripper. Actually, some believe that H.H. Holmes is Jack the Ripper since he fell off the grid around the time Jack the Ripper started his killing spree in London. Records have even been found that H.H. Holmes used several different names and those names were found on a manifest going toward London before the murders. The story of H.H. Holmes intriques me and the murder house that he built. The mind of this guy was insane but he had to be very intelligent to build this home and no one ever catch what he was doing. Story was told that he would fire the hired hands because he did not want anyone finding out his design for the murder house. I can not wait to see her side of this story. **

If you have not watched the TV series on H.H. Holmes then I would highly suggest this.

Also, to add the joy of this book coming out, there is rumor that possibly Kerri Maniscalco may be in Nashville with no other than Stephanie Garber herself. They will be there for a book signing on May 11th. Now, I don't think Kerri has actually announced this so I could be wrong but my heart would be so happy to have 2 of my favorite authors in one place! I can NOT contain my excited until I hear if the news is true!!!!
