Review: House of Furies

Jul 31, 2018

House of Furies House of Furies by Madeleine Roux
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoy Madeleine Roux's books. They do somewhat read like middle grade novels.

This story had a very good concept. I went into this book not reading any synopsis on it. I had no idea what this story was about. But after I read Asylum and really enjoying it, I wanted to give this one a shot while I wait on book too of Asylum series to be released to me by the library.

We start with a girl named, Louisa Ditton, escaping a harsh school where punishment was the lesson of the day. She is met by an elderly woman which she calls the "Crone." The offers a chance for escape, so she takes it. She arrives at the Coldthistle House.

Things are not as they seem in Coldthistle House. Afterwards, Louisa begins to see things and experience things that scare her and all she wants to do is leave. But in the process of trying to steal items to leave the house, she comes across "The Residents" that live in the attic of the house. Louisa is drawn to touch the book they are protecting but the only thing she did not know, if she touched the book, she could not leave Coldthistle House. After she met with the master of the home and soon finds out what touching the book has caused, Louisa is more anxious to leave the home.

There are turns in this book that are very enjoyable. I recommend this book as a light read.

Locke & Key, Vol 2: Head Games Locke & Key, Vol 2: Head Games by Joe Hill
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Somebody stop me from ready these...

I love the key concept. This would make a good TV series. Do one key per TV series.

This novel we meet the echo in the well.

Review: Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft

Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I don't read a lot of graphic novels but I have been hearing about this series and wanted to give it a try.

It is a story about a family that a family member was murdered and they moved off and when the murder breaks free from prison, he finds them.

The home they move to has these magical keys to open certain doors to different worlds and the murder is wanting these keys.

I am moving right on to book 2. I am reading these on Comixology. I did try the 30 day trial so I am going to fit in as many that I can borrow on this series before having to purchase the rest.

Review: Stolen Children

Jul 12, 2018

Stolen Children Stolen Children by Peg Kehret
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was such a cute book. I found myself at times holding my breath wishing people would call the cops. WHY ARE YOU NOT CALLING THE COPS!!!!

Even though I knew how this book would end, it still makes you wondering what will happen in moments.

We are met with 2 children that were kidnapped and took to an abandoned building. The kidnappers would video the kids and send out the DVD in hopes to build up for the ransom money they want but what they did not know, is that the older girl they kidnapped was giving signs, in the DVD, of evidence the cops would need to help find them.

I really enjoyed this book.

Review: If You Find Me

Jul 11, 2018

If You Find Me If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Trigger Warning: Rape/Drugs/child abuse

WOW. I came across this book while searching for other books from my library. I had to read it and I am glad I did.

This story is about 2 young girls, Carey and Janessa, that were raised in the woods. They had very little to no knowledge of the outside world. After being left for 2 months alone in the woods, after their mother left them, they was a knock on the door. They were being picked up. Torn away from the only life they knew.

They are struggling with being accepted and the secrets of the woods that keep them silent but sometimes trust and love can heal the most broken of hearts.

I love this story. Very heard breaking at times. The author did a great job on this book. I recommend this book.

This was a cute book. Nothing fancy but I enjoyed it. If you like a good swampy novel, this one is for you. It does have it small moments of eerie to it but I enjoyed it. The Swamp will call to you!!!

Thank you to Black Spot Books for sending me this book to review.

Review: The Year of the Beasts

The Year of the Beasts The Year of the Beasts by Cecil Castellucci
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have had this book for sometime and read it when I was first sent the book before release date but I forgot to complete it here and post my review.

This book was just okay. I had 2 different worlds going on in the book and I really could not understand where they came together. The graphic part of the book was not my favorite but the written part of the novel, I enjoyed. I enjoyed the sister outlook on both girl.

This is a small read but if you find out how the 2 worlds come together in this book, let me know. I am still confused by that part of it.

Review: The Way I Used to Be

Jul 6, 2018

The Way I Used to Be The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a 5* read for me!

This story is so touching. It may be fiction but so many lives are effected daily by rape and live with this horror in them.

This story is about a girl named Eden that was raped in her own home with her very own family in the rooms next to her and they knew nothing. After trying to tell her family what happened, she was cut off several times to never get it out. She felt she had no one to trust. She was tormented in her own mind that made her live her life in misery and therefore, it put those around her in misery. She was bitter, rude, and short with those that would try to get close to her. She went through her entire high school years feeling this way. The once sweet girl did not even recognize the person she had become.

She met several people along the way that would try to understand her but she never would let them in. She was hiding this secret that was destroying her piece by piece.

I highly suggest this book. I can not imagine living with the torment she lived with all those years. We can be around people daily and not even know they struggle with secrets that are killing them on the inside.

Thank you to this author for writing such a profound book. I will continue to read more books from Amber Smith.

Review: Storm Siren

Jul 5, 2018

Storm Siren Storm Siren by Mary Weber
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had to DNF at about 23% in.

I may give this another try later. I could not get myself through this book. I am not sure if it was the narrator on the audiobook or the storyline but I could not make it through. I normally don't DNF books but I just did not want to make myself try when there are so many other books on my TBR right now that I want to get to.

In the future, if I feel I need to read it again, I will but based on what I heard I did give it a 3 star. I did enjoy the first part of the book where she was on trial to be sold and then storm came. ( I think that is what happened. Maybe she was on trial for something else) That is how well I was able to get in the book. Sorry guys.

Review: Steel Scars

Steel Scars Steel Scars by Victoria Aveyard
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really did not enjoy this novella. It was just a bit boring for me. I think because I enjoyed the first one so much and they had nothing in common.

I pushed my way through it but now I am not sure if I was to continue with the series and go into book 1 if this is what the story is really about.

Review: Daughter of Deep Silence

Jul 3, 2018

Daughter of Deep Silence Daughter of Deep Silence by Carrie Ryan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I first heard of this book from YouTube and thought I would give it a chance.

It starts with a group of people on a ship that was attacked. Only 3 survived.

Frances was one of the only ones that survived that knew the truth and she wanted to set out for revenge for the death of her parents and her friend Libby.

Frances met Libby's father and took on the identity of Libby. This is where story turned for me. I was like, OK? SO they look so much alike that she just took on her the name of Libby and all of Libby's friends and family did not know the difference. There are no 2 people that look this alike and are not twins.

The story was okay but I felt like Libby (Frances) was trying to heard in the story. There were to many flash backs at what went on during the attack of the ship. We found out once that her family was murdered but she continued to tell the scene several times through the book. There were times that it through me off guard because I was not aware it was a flashback and then I would finally notice where the story was.

I did enjoy the concept of the book but I do think it could have been executed better.
