Review: Six of Crows

I want to read these so that I will not ruin things for myself when the Netflix series comes out. Do I need to start with The Shadow & Bone series so I will not be lost? I have heard it both ways. But some say to fully understand the magic system you need to read the Shadow & Bone series first! Any suggestions?
